Hey

I just got my hands on the new Powershot A70 today. It's my first digicam, and I'm totaly exited about it :-)

If you have any questions about it - please post.

Thomas

How is the viewfinder?
--------------

Well since it's my first digicam, I don't if I'm qualified to answer that question. But my impresion is,that it's ok. I have had some problems in low light over a distance of 4-5 meters. I then tried refocus and then it was ok ??

Where did you buy it? I've been looking all over, and no-one seems to haveit in stock yet. Also, is it small enough to fit into the pocket of a pair of jeans, or a shirt pocket? I need a small camera, and this one looks like it may be a little bigger than I hoped. Thanks, Matt

Hey Matthew

I live in Denmark (Europe - look in my profile), and I bought it from a danish internet retailer.

http://www.itbutikken.dk/uk/default.asp Here you can look at the page in english. I don't know if they ship to the US.

I think it's quite small. Smaller than I thought, but it's not a pocket size camera. The handle (battery compartment) makes it to thick, and the weight of the batteries makes it to heavy :-(

Hi banan911,

Thanks for being the test driver.
I was wondering if you could do a favor and tell me if the video capturing
mode at VGA 640x480 is only 30 secs worth each time or does it capture
'up' to the capacity of your Compact Flash Memory Card ?
Of course, this test required that you have at least a 256 MB card to record
past the 30 secs at stated, if at all possible !

Also, if you connect it to the TV and view the scenes (intending to record
or take a still picture) thru the A70, does for example, human movement
seems 'jerky' or smooth just like watching a movie ?

Also, does it focus well (really quickly like less than a sec) in dimly lit rooms ?

Thanks

How manny F-stops does it have? And is it constant throught the zoom range?

I know the A40 has only 2 fstops (max and min) and it varies when zooming. This could make adding a digital slave + automatic flash difficult since most require the aperature to be constant.

TIA.

Hey

Regarding the video capture mode, the manaul describes that it's only possible to make a 30 sec video clip at VGA 640x480 even if you have a large CF card. (3 min at 320x240 and 3 min + at 160x120)

I haven't got a TV with AV, so I haven't been able to test that part yet. But Canon delivers a program called Remote Capture, and there movements are very smooth.

About the autofocus - please see my earlier reply :-)

Hey

I don't know if I'm answering this correctly, since I'm new to non "point and shoot" cams.

You can choose aperture range manualy. My danish manual describes the values; F2,8 F3,2 F4,0 F4,5 F4,8 F5,0 F5,6 F6,3 F7,1 F8,0.

If the answer doesn't correspond to the question - please decribe it in newbe style :-)

So it does have multiple stop between min and max. A good thing...

Now if only it can stay at 4.8 (or smaller aperture) through out the zoom range.

I just testet the aperture settings, and at max zoom you can choose from F4,5 F5,6 F6,3 F7,1 F8,0. Without zooming you can choose the whole range :-)

Hi!

I've got an A70 today and I am playing with it right now. Can you tell me if the LCD screen shows some interferences when you press the shutter button or the zoom lever, please ? Is this normal ?

Thanks

Mat,

I just ordered an A70 last week from Ritzcamera.com last week. It hasn't arrived yet but I have received notification that it has been shipped. I'll put a post up after I receive it and do some initial testing. Price I paid was $349 with free shipping.

I got mine yesterday. I'm also trying to figure out what to expect.

My LCD shows some horizontal lines related to zooming. They're most visible after the zoom is complete. I suspect this is normal, and is just the camera's processor adapting to the new setting.

When I press the shutter the screen goes blank, which I guess could be considered interference! Then you get the review shot for two seconds.

Maybe there is another source of information for this, but I would really like to know the lag time for the A70. Can you comment on the lag time?

Thanks.

Hey

In my opinion the A70 had very little shutter lag - In most cases I haven't noticed any :-)
