A newb question for you all.

Everytime I seem to do anything to a JPG and save as to another file, I lose my EXIF data. Now, an easy way around this, I'd imagine, is to save a copy... then go into PS, edit and then save on the original. I can do this for the future, but is there anyway to extract EXIF info from an original and stick it into another JPG that has no EXIF embedded?

Tom,

PS 7 displays and preserves EXIF data, so if you edit a JPEG with PS 7, the EXIF data isn't lost.

I've seen reference to various EXIF readers and managers that will read and copy EXIF data, but haven't used any. Maybe somebody else can recommend one.

Exactly how do you display EXIF data in Photoshop 7. I don't find it in HELP. I can see EXIF data displayed in the PS file browser window for my undited jpegs, but this information is gone on my modified images.

somebody one time recommended exifer, a program that somehow preserved the exif data on the front-end of using PS.

Joe,

You can see the EXIF info in the file browser, as you said. You can also open a file and select file info from the file menu. This command also has an option to export or import metadata like EXIF from and to files. do a search in help on "file info" for more on how it works.

I seem to remember that I had to set a preference in PS to get it to preserve EXIF data when saving edited JPEGs, but now I can't find either a preference or info about it in the help.

I found the File info, select EXIF, which works for original unedited images but there is no information retained for my edited jpegs. I can't find anything either in PS HELP, except this:

" Preserve EXIF Metadata (ImageReady) Select to preserve metadata from a digital camera"
So that option may only be available in ImageReady.

It would really be beneficial to retain EXIF data, especially when only doing minor edits for internet viewing. Camera settings may be of interest and beneficial to viewers.
