FAQ: Plan Ahead for a Corrupt SM Card

This comes up from time to time, and I just answered another post on this topic. Better to have the program handy now, than wait for an emergency.

A great free tool that has saved many folks in here a lot of heartache is "Digital Image Recovery" by Alexander Grau. The file can be downloaded from the "files" section of the Oly 2100 Yahoo Group (free Yahoo sign up required):
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Oly2100/files/

the file is Digital recovery-dir.zip

The latest version has gone commercial, but is reasonablly priced, and can be found here:

Once you've recovered as much as you can off your corrupt media, attempt to reformat it in the camera first.

If that fails, find someone with a Zio! or similar SM card reader and run SMPREP.EXE on it. Alternatively, find someone with a Fuji digicam that takes SM (or visit your local store) and let the Fuji have a go at it.

If the card gets "revived" with with either of the above methods, put it back in your camera, and let it reformat it again. Things should be ok from there.
