One thing NOT to do with a 28-135

Don't ever put into any kind of tight fitting case, sleeve, or pocket. I once put mine into a not-all-that-tight slot in my backpack and the slight pressure on the IF ring jammed it up so that focusing was r-e-a-l slow. It eventually worked its way out but I almost sent it in as it was so annoying.

I still shoot the 28-135 IS on my 1D as a walk-around lens. The focal range and IS is hard to beat for versatility. Its not an L but its still hard to beat (if you have a decent copy).
