I was checking out employee purchase programs through Leica, and was very intrigued and interested in the bodies. My boss owns about 24 different Leica's ranging from current to very old and collectable. I really love the look, feel and picture that they produce.

Anyone shoot with them? M7 or M6?

Thanks!

I used to... but not anymore. The digital darkroom is the way to go.

Those Leica bodies are mechanical marvels, but the field moved on.

I use M3, M6, and several R cameras. I've had the same M3 since 1965. I've photographed Richard Nixon and Jimi Hendrix with it, not at the same time...I use the M6 with a 35 Summicron as my "notebook," shooting tri-x of everyday things around me.

I think we'll see a Leica digital for serious use shortly, if not at PMA. What was that gizmo that crawled around Mars, sending back digital photos? That incorporated a lot of Leitz technology.

I also have a Digilux. It is pretty good.

I have had leica fo about 5-6 years now, but have recently been inerested in digital. my current leica kit consists of:
M6/0.85
M6/0.58
50mm Sum
35mm Sum
24 mm Elmar
90 mm APO Sum
50 mm Noctilux

Great gear, wonderful pics.

I've been infected as well. I have an M6, 35 Summicron ASPH, 50 Summicron, 50 Noctilux and 90 APO. I don't think I ever will or want to be cured of this. But, after PMA, it will be my only film camera.

I used to work with an old R3 for three years when I served my apprenticeship. I am still impressed by the fact that this little bugger was still going strong at over half a million exposures on the first shutter. And it probably still is today.

The Leica prime lenses were the best I have ever seen and that includes Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax. They're not cheap, but they are just THAT good!

If Leica ever come out with a D-SLR, I will be seriously tempted (provided it's not a DOA case like the Contax).

Cheers
Stefan

The older M3, from the fifties, is a great camera. You can often get one used on Ebay for a good price (and you won't find scams in the Leica Ebay listings).

Married to a good old Summicron like the 50/2 Dual Range and you will love the feel and the results.

Sure, there are limitations, but to tell the truth I see more of them with digital than film. Shoot with a good rangefinder for a roll or two and then look at the slides. You'll love it.

When Leica started the 35mm ball rolling the photographic world opened up with tons of information being available to both pro and non-pro. Now we are in the digital age and at times it seems like the dark ages. The walls are up and very little information is on the table. We have to search, experiment, and reverse-engineer virtually every aspect of the new technology.

I hope it changes.

Jeffrey,

Do you have any experience with Digilux 1? Looks like it had great features.

Wondering if it's better than G3.

I might sell my S40 and get on new P & S. G3 is on the top of my list but Digilux looks interesting.

I have an M7 and love it. Easily the best built camera I've every touched. I may be swimming up river but I'll probably be shooting digital and film.

No offense, but what does this have to do with a Canon digital SLR forum?

Maybe some canon users appreciate quality?? At a recent speed skating event in Calgary, one of the PJs sporting a 1D and 400mm F2.8 also had two Leica M6s around his neck - for taking grab shots. Very nice combination of equipment!!

It has to do with the fact that some people believe that this is a general purpose forum.

Why else would people post asking about Printers (how about the printer forum?) or How much storage do you have? (how about the storage forum?) or all of that political or gun debates.

I know the reply is "well, don't read it" - but the problem is that you often have to page through a couple of pages to find half decent Canon stuff.

So anyone out there used to own a OM 2 and upgrade it to a OM 2n???

I use M7 for when i need to be discreet, or for ultra low light situations. The only difference is that one doesn't have review ability and instant developing .. but the camera definetely still has its uses. Its size and silence are ideal for when it would not be appropriate to pull out a 1Ds with flash, big lenses, etc. I can walk around any place with the m7 and 28mm f/2 or 50mm noctilux f/1.0 exposed and nobody will take any notice ... there is tremendous value in that ...

beyond the practical aspects, the manufacturing of the camera is exceptional and there is certainly a lot of mystique to using one. One seems to feel more compelled to really take the camera everywhere which sometimes yields superb shots that you would have missed.

Can you tell me more about it? Have you ever used any other P & S?

I hate to ask too many questions but I've read up on the Panasonic version and it can go both ways. I like the style, functionality and manual focusing.

Wondering how manual focus works on a P & S.

BTW, I love your sense of humor.

Perhaps, but that could be said of any photographer, no matter
what brand they use. The M6 is not digital, and it isn't Canon. Sorry
if anyone gets their feelings hurt, but there is enough off topic stuff
here already. Take it to open talk, anything goes there.

I used to have an Olympus setup for film, loved the small size and quality feel, owned: OM10, 2XOM4, OM4Ti various lenses, the OM4Ti is wonderfully compact and well made, kind of miss using it, but I can't be bother with film any more, and my eyesight isn't what it used to be so the autofocus is nice now!
