Been trying a few different CF media cards with my new 5700 and I'm very confused about the results (v. disappointed with the Transcend card)

Test captured exactly the same picture in RAW mode (full size) - write results were as follows (measured from shutter press until disk write symbol disappears)

Transcend 512MB 30x Ultra: 27 secs

Lexar 32MB 8x Ultra: 19 secs

Standard 128MB Viking Data: 21 secs

very disappointed with these results - am I missing something here ?

As it's been said, different cards perform diferently with different cameras..
I tested a Sandisk, Lexar 12X, and a Transcend 30X with my S30
the Transcend and Lexar were about the same.. the Sandisk was way slower...

the Transcend downloading files via USB 2. to my HD was only about the same speed as the Lexar ..

only writing to the cards from my PC is where the Transcend was noticably faster then the Lexar, and both were way faster then the Sandisk

From what I read on the web sometimes ago, each cameras has their own write/read speed rate. That means when you put a 30x CF card into your camera, doesn't mean your camera will read/write any faster than a 12x or 24x CF card. Is the camera you own limits the write/read speed.

Try it on a D1x or D60 ..etc, you will notice it should perform better than 12x or 24x!!

The high end professional digital cameras always have much faster write/read transfering rate !!

hope it helps

I'm just wondering if you bought these different cards and then returned the slow ones or your local camera shop lets you do in house tests. Thanks.

Hi

I understand what you are saying, but that still does not explain why the Transcend 30x seems to be much slower than the Lexar 8x, and even much slower than the standard Viking Data CF (which I assume is 1X if it's just a standard CF card ?)

Mike,

See the Digital Film Comparison in this forum. You'll be more annoyed and confused.

The Viking cards run around 8X, I believe. They aren't 1X, that's for sure!

My question is 30x what? Lexar states their baseline for comparisons on their packaging, does Transcend? I don't believe that there are any regulations on what they have to compare the write times to. My gut feeling is that it is mostly just marketing guys trying to boost product sales. Just a guess...

I don't know if it makes a difference in the the differences in capacity. 512mb slowest vs 128mb next slowest vs 32mb fastest. Anybody have any idea?
