D5100 with 35mm 1.8 AF-S front focus problem

Wider than f4 it's a thin thin thin focus range. Even at like 3.3 I'll be surprised by how fast it falls off sometimes. Wide open you just better not move the camera so there's no such thing as focus and recompose or even focus and breathe. You should probably get used to shooting a burst if you're handholding wide open even at relativel high shutter speeds since a silght move can throw things way off. You might come back into focus over the course of three clicks.

Sounds like user error/expectation since it's the same problem with two copies. That's good news though since it's a very good lens. I wouldn't give up on it.
