Why doesn't Canon have an intervalometer?

I wonder why top-of-the-line Canon DSLR cameras do not have built-in intervalometers like many of the top Nikon cameras do, such as the D800 and the new D600?

The D600 not only has a built-in intervalometer, it also has the ability to preview time lapse shots as a video sequence (Canon, are you listening?).
