After using Smart Range in this extreme situation I usually then raise the level of the dark areas using brightness and contrast curves to the desired level, I have scripts set up in PSP9 and I just press a button. This visually gives the impression of a much larger captured DR, and the noise level is low enough in the shadows to not become too visible.

When i was PP these i just moved the sliders to give me the look i want .I did want them to look dark in the forground as this looked good against the sky .I pushed the last one a bit hard as i wanted to show the sunlight on the breaking waves .

I thought that was the case, and they all look exellent as they are, I forgot to add that in the last post.
