Hello Tom, thanks for the kind comment. A Hoya Macro filter is a filter that fits on the end of the lens and allows for very close macro shots; much closer than the lens normally allows. For instance, the Hoya +4 macro filter allows me to get within a few inches of my subject with the 18-200mm OS lens. Without the filter the 18-200mm lens can't focus closer than about three feet (if I remember its specifications correctly). On a side note, I've been consistently pleased with the sharpness I've been able to achieve with this filter. Originally I thought these types of filters would be low quality and drastically reduce image quality. The two above shots were done handheld and yet retained very good detail.
