If you really want to get into it, use a tripod and raw.

Take your 3(or more) shots at 3(or more) different EV, then combine them(pick your software of choice) for eg in photoshop's photomerge, you'll end up with a huge dynamic range file that your monitor and printer can't handle(save that file for future use) now you need to compress the files dynamic range to something that will display properly, which is called tone-mapping, this is where the image looks like a artistic painting or a normal picture depending on how it's tone-mapped.
