Can this portrait be fixed?

Doing senior portraits in my basement. Had to borrow a Rebel while my 50D was being repaired. Anyway - the photos with the gray background are fine, the ones with the black background are over exposed. I wasn't paying attention and didn't catch it sooner.

This photo has been edited a bit in aperture then portrait professional. If it's better, I can post the original - with no edits. I must say too that the copy of this on my computer is much sharper - must be dpreview??

Any help is appreciated and also, if you wouldn't mind sharing how you were able to improve.
I also have PSE6.
