D700 - help please.....

Can I ask for some help please.

I was taking a lot of images at a friend's wedding. They had a pro-photographer booked so no real pressure.

I am delighted with most shots BUT, a little concerned about some others.

Camera used Nikon D700. (and D300)
Lens Tamron 28-75 2.8 and Nikon 70-200 2.8

Problem 1

Lighting was very tricky; rain squalls and then very bright sunshine.
I was trying to shoot manual because of the differences.

Some shots have come out way too bright and even though shot in RAW, I have some unrecoverable blown images in parts. (Can post examples if necessary)

I was using matrix mode exposure.

Even when I selected shutter priority, I have a few shots with this problem.

Any advice how to avoid this in the future please?

Problem 2

I was shooting indoors with poor light. Often ISO 800 but used 2.8 with flash.

Images are exposed well BUT....focus issue.

In a line of three people standing almost in a perfect line, in some images, if I focus on the centre person one on the left, or on the right is out of focus....

Should I have closed aperture to say 5.6 or F8 or should I have chosen a different focus option to the one used. (The bottom "Tit" position as described by K Rockwell)

I hope these questions are not too basic but I ask because I am here to learn from experience please.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Best wishes
