If you have Photoshop, There are a number of different ways to accomplish the end result. Also Lightroom is fantastic. I have both.

Since Photoshop is so popular, here is what I do Most of the time, but not always.

I like to use the levels, not auto levels. I think it's the easiest way to correct an image.
I like it because it teaches about imaging in general. It's fun also.

Sometimes I like to use Shadows & Highlights, this is good to use when you have a little experience. But the great thing about Photoshop, is if you think you screwed your image up, you can always undo everything. I would take a good look at Photoshop elements if your going to start this hobby with a commitment to improve.

For me the first thing I always do when evaluating an image, I ask my self what is this image going to be used for. Then I go from there.
