I placed an order at B&H in April for a D800, and received it recently and found it had serious left AF issue. I returned it and got a replacement with the same issue. For both copies I didn't notice the prompt to set date and time. The first picture I took has EXIF showing the "date/time original" to be Jan 27, 2012, with a wrong time of the day. The actual time should be in September. Both D800 copies have serial# 3041xxx. I saw some open box photos online showing there is a manufacture date label on the inside of the box, but I didn't see that on mine.

I always trusted B&H before but my question is, is there a chance these two cameras are returned ones? Is there always a prompt to set datetime for the first use of the camera? I am frustrated because people say about 10% - 40% D800s may be defective but to me, that chance is 100%.

Hi friend,

Check the shutter count in the EXIF. There's no date/time prompt on the D800 (Thom was wrong about this), it just shows the CLOCK error icon on the top LCD if the date/time has not been set.

I can't recall if it is possible to shoot without setting the date but as another post above says you can check the EXIF data for image number - I know of no way to reset this.

12/27/2012 the D800 was not released. I believe it is pre-set on 12/29/2012.

Do a shutter count and get it over it. There is no reason for paranoia when you can do a shuuter count. There is no manufacturing date inside the box and no date prompt with D800. I think you have a fresh unit.

Hi friend,

It is possible to shoot without setting the date/time. Some functions, however, are not available. Interval timer, for example, is grayed out until the date/time is set.

Thank you so much for all the inputs everyone! I did a check and shutter count was indeed 1 for the first picture. I didn't know which one I should trust more - the shutter count or datetime setting prompt, and now I got the answer. I would return the defective body again and wait until Nikon eventually fixes the problem before buying another.

BTW, I saw the manufacture date labels of some Asian version D800s online. It seems the US version doesn't have that.

I just got mine today and am wonder the same thing. On the top LCD I see CLOCK.
I guess it means to set it?

I hit menu and I don't see it asking me to set it so I go through the menu and go to the section to set time and date (Time zone and date section) and it is at UTC0, 19/01/2012 21:48:53 (LONDON, CASABLANCA).

I can't tell if mine is used so I'm trying to get the shutter count right now.

The led protector looks a little scuffed...(superficial scuffs).

Gary

UPDATE: Yes, my shutter count is 1 for my 1st picture. so far so good... except my camera rattles when shaken lightly (and it's not the metal strap rings, it's from the flash .. if I open it, no rattle).

My D800 arrived today too. It didn't show "clock err" on the top display, but was set to a date in March, and in LONDON/CASABLANCA. Packaging looked ok, but just a bit off - the accessories were neatly bundled but some plastic bags were not sealed.

Then I took the first shot and saw a filename of DSC_1188.NEF . I checked the actual shutter count in EXIF and it was 1121. I didn't bother going any further - it's going back to Amazon. They apologized for their error but I will certainly check the replacement very carefully when it arrives on Monday!

Hi Gary,

Does your D800 have the left AF issue? And do you mind sharing the first 4 digits of the serial# please?

Hi - the first four digits of the serial number: 3031. I didn't check for the left focus issue, and the camera's already been shipped back to Amazon. I was so dismayed at the shutter count that I couldn't pack the thing up and ship it out fast enough. In retrospect, I should have taken advantage of the situation and used it through the weekend as a practice tool.

I don't have a fast wide lens to test.

my serial no is 30067xx.

I have the 28-300, 50-500, 18-200,18-270, 18.55,55-300,8-16.

my widest is the Sig 8-16mm but its not fast and it is not rd.

How do you check shutter count?
How do you access EXIF data?
The User's Manual does not have these in the table of contents.

I got mine ysterday and today I spent a few hours testing but after a few hours and about 150 images all I can say is that the AF seems to work fine with the 50/1.4G, 60/2.8G, 105/2.8G and the 24-120/4. I haven't checked the box, but mine came with the time set to London time and with the latest firmware and a shutter count of about twenty.

Please note that I do not own Nikon D800. However, past experiences with several Nikon DSLRs taught me:

1). Check whether your new Nikon DSLR ask you to choose the language when you turn the camera on for the first time.

2). Check whether your new Nikon DSLR ask you to set the date when you turn the camera on for the first time.

3). Obviously, check the shutter count (I use Opanda EXIF viewer and http://www.myshuttercount.com ).

I bought mine from BH and it arrived with shuttle count of 1 for my first shuttle release but date was way off by more than 4 month. BH assured me it' brand new.

Page 26 of the D800 manual says "the language option in the setup menu is automatically highlighted the first time the menus are displayed".

Also step 7 of this basic setup states:

"Set the date and time".
