Canon G15 Sample Images + vs RX100

Ok, G15 released,
so how well Canon did its homework to match RX100 performance?

First of all,
Canon G15 incorporats 5X optical zoom (140mm) which trumps RX100 3.6X (100mm)
with only 4mm added to the thickness of the camera.

lens got up to 2 stops brighter.
Canon f2.4 at 100mm vs Sony f4.9 at 100mm,

btw. Sony lens had visible soft corners unless stopped down to f2.4 even at 28mm.

Also, Canon G15 IQ using f1.8 apperture at 28mm
is without any visible distortion or softness

G15 delivers outstanding macro mode for distances about 1 cm from lens
without distortion or loss of sharpness even at f1.8!!!

RX100 had massive softness in f1.8 macro & highlight glow/blooming

G15 has multi-material nanocoating on the lens that prevents lens flare and purple streaks
that were commonly found in RX100 camera

everyone was bragging about 10fps shooting in bursts with Sony RX100
and called G series slow.

Now, G15 introduced new shutter system allowing 9.6 fps high-speed continuous shooting

G15 has focus accuracy of 99.5%,

AF speed improved by 53%
to 0.17sec at 28mm to 0.25sec at 140 mm

G15 emloys multi-area WB,

absence of which led to multiple problems with colorcasts while shooting indoors with RX100 under mixed lighting.

Also new features like

  • "Dual Axis Electronic Level",

  • ability to add 1.4X Tele-converter TC-DC58E,

  • EOS E-dial,

  • "sleeping" and "pet" face detection,

  • class leading IS "ceramic ball support system",

  • super-slow-motion 120fps!!! 640x480 video

were introduced.

People who were concerned about DR - there is nothing to worry about.
Even at moderate ISO it is great for a compact camera like G15
