At macro distances subject and camera movements are always a problem and flash overcomes this problem.

You might want to look over this book, all taken with a Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX. This is an expensive flash but is of very high quality.

You can of course find cheaper ones. Some real macro flash units sell for $120 or less and LED ones sell for even less.

I have one of the Bower flashes being delivered to me here in Thailand by a friend from the US in 4 weeks. I'll do a quick review when I have a chance to test it out but the Amazon reviews generally give a pretty accurate overview.
