it really boils down to...

...corner softness and VR speed.

The VR1 corners on FF are not as sharp as they ought to be, especially wide open. I use mine more for people shots than anything else. So a slightly softer corner is not a problem, perhaps even better this way. But if you are shooting landscapes or architecture this could bother you.

The VR1 is one of Nikon's earliest lenses with VR. Nikon has improved the technology a fair amount since then. It is still useful and effective on the VR1, but noticably better on the VR2.

Falloff is not really a serious issue. It can be corrected in post if it bothers you.

As for me, I have no intentions to upgrade to the VR2 version.
