Yes, you still need to focus and recompose but more points do help with focus accuracy.

How do they help if you have to select a single point point your are using to focus? Otherwise, if you allow the camera to select a point, it may just focus on something else and you would miss the shot. I believe "focus & recompose" on 5D/5D2 is done with the central point selected and all other points disabled. Can you elaborate?

I think his point was that the center points are so close together that you can leave them all "on", since you're not going to focus on something that you didn't want to focus on.

Is there a setting to leave only these 9 points on an all others off?
