Understanding lighting is also key

The other useful behaviour is to be aware of the lighting conditions around you AND useful objects to meter from, white walls, blue sky, deep shadows etc. Since digital is "free", it doesn't cost anything to experiment.

Keeping your eye on lighting conditions is also a great point to keep in mind. Thanks for bringing that up. A lot of what goes on for "my camera screwed up the exposure, AGAIN!" boils down to shooting in terrible to impossible lighting and expecting the auto-magic meter to perform a miracle. We need to remember that quality of light is as, if not more important than quantity of light.
