Traditionally, Center Weighted Averaging takes 60-70% of it's influence from a central area of the frame and 40-30% from the remainder of the frame. The percentages and actual area varies between makes and models. In a some ways it is a mixture of both Spot and Matrix metering, very versatile and effective once the photographer understands how it works.
