For aquarium photos I think you will be better off with a longer lens - I think you will find the working distance with a 50 is too short. There are a number of 90 and 100 mm macros out there. If cost is an issue Canon FD lenses are usually inexpensive. Minolta is also a good value, in my opinion. You could also try a 100 or 135 with extension tubes to get closer focus, though it would be less convenient to work with.

Dealing with small moving subjects is difficult. Expect to put in some practice times before you begin to get consistently good photos.
