Ball head vs. panhead??
The ball head shines when you want to quickly rotate the camera into position. This is not easily accomplished with a panhead. As far as “flopping over”, this should not be the case with a decent ball head (mine is a Manfrotto 496RC2) with a knob to adjust friction. The friction helps to compensate for heavier equipment. The only change I made was the addition of an L-bracket for the DSLR. This allows me to keep the ball head and camera vertical for shots with a portrait orientation. Otherwise the head has to sit at 90 degrees from vertical which reduces your viewing height.
