Yes, this is actually easy to test,

however, it might affect the tonal range?

It will but the only areas which will be affected in a meaningful way are the shadows.

According to the DxO Mark scores, the D800 has a tonal range of less than 10 bits. How does this relate to the 14/12 bit choice? Does a choice of 14 or 12 bits affect the DxO Mark scores? Or does the sensor score act as a sort of constraint so that if the sensor score is 10 bits, it means that under normal conditions the choice of 14 or 12 bits does not matter. However, with 12 bits one can lift shadows by two stops without loosing IQ, and by 4 stops using 14 bits?
