Re: Second lens for travel - 70-300 or 28-300

My basic lenses (on a D800) is the 24-120 and the 16-35. We owned the Nikon and Tamron 70-300. The Nikon was better than the Tamron at the 70mm end and the Tamron beat the Nikon at the 300mm end.

My wife gets her D800 with the 28-300 to replace her D7000 with the Nikon 18-200. I did some lens testing and sold both the 70-300's and bought a 28-300 for myself to meet my telephoto needs as the 28-300 beat both the 70-300's both in the center and near the edges. I might add that by far the majority of my shooting is from f8 to f16. (I primarily shoot landscape.)

My 28-300 becomes my tele lens from 120mm out as well as my one lens walkaround when I don't want to carry two lenses.

My vote is for the 28-300 for a one lens solution (well maybe cheat a little and put a 20 mm 2.8 in your pocket to get a little wider w/o much weight and a 50 mm 1.8 for inside shots.
