36MP

Three friends of mine (one a pro) observed two things - 1.) It's a tripod camera

Your 'pro' was wrong, then

...and 2.) you better have good glass.

Yes - but 'good' doesn't necessarily mean 'the most expensive', it just means 'high-resolving'.

It's very unforgiving when it comes to using "cheaper" lenses .....you are almost forced to use "Pro glass.

Nope. "Cheap" can mean kit lens or consumer zoom, in which case it might be a dubious effort to shoot 36MP. But any good prime will usually give great results on the D800, and they can be had for very little money.

...For myself, I just bought a new (actually a Nikon refurb) D700 mainly because I have no need for a 36MP camera and I have some "pro" glass!

The D700 is truly a great camera, but your 'pro' glass will resolve more on 24 or 36MP... Just sayin', in case that's what you're after.
