By portrait do you mean tight headshots?

If you ae looking for the best lenses to shoot head and should photos with the ability to get closer and concentrate on eye makeup, for such purposes as makeup advertising, your two best choices for a 7D are the Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens and the Sigma 70mm macro lens.

There two put you just on either side of the wonderful Canon 100 and Nikon 105 macro/mico lenses on 35mm cameras.

Out of your two suggestions ... I photogrpahed a dozen lawyers, mostly women with makeup applied by a stylist, on Thursday, mostly with an 18-55. It was fine for what I was doing, but I was not shooting tight head shots. So in your choice, the 24-105 is better than the 17-55.

The lenses to add to your list, and then go buy if you want a zoom, is the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 stabilized, or either Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens, all depending on your budget. The Tamron is the bargain of the three.
