Ignore price for a minute and concentrate on pros

D50 pros - can use old screw type AF lenses
has a 1/500th flash sync speed
'

cons - only 2GB SD card ( can use 4gb if formatted in computer -but seriously don't do this)
not so good above ISO 400
only 6mp (but not as big a deal as people make it out to be)

D3100
pros - usable ISO 1600
more megapixels
pretty darned compact
able to take full advantage of SDHC cards up to at least 32GB

cons - only can focus modern AFS (and it's immediate predecessor AFI)

I'd recommend most people go with the 3100, though if you can find a good deal on a D40X, 60, or 3000 you could consider that too.

Me, though, I really dig the 1/500th flash sync speed, great for flash fill on a sunny day.
