Hi.

I've owned the D70, D80, D90 and the D700. After much experimentation I came to the conclusion the centre weighted averaging was the most reliable method of metering (except when fill flash was involved). It tended to be more forgiving than using spot and more consistant than matrix. It is very easy to judge the overall value of your subject and use compensation where applicable (bright subject +1,2, dark subjects -2,3 etc).

I was never a big fan of the metering being tied to the focus point since I didn't alway want my subject to be "properly" exposed!

Give it a try, you may be pleasantly surprised!

P.S. I tend to use mostly full manual or aperture priority.
