Re: A99 & Lens Firmware

for lenses it's called "chipping" the orginal lens manufacturing receives the lens back from Customer either by customer dropping off or shipping it via UPS/FEDEX. The lens manufacturer will then open/repair the lens with an updated chipset...

Has nothing to do with BODY of camera...

But apparently for the Sony lenses there is no -rechipping required?

I quote from a Sony employee:

This was the question asked:

"If this is the case, and the PDOS requires updated lens firmware, wouldn't this require Sony to update all the firmware of all the lenses listed on the Spring 2013 list. So we will be required to send all our updatable lenses to Sony to have the firmware updated. I don't see this as likely. Maybe it's for the AF-D function instead"

This is the answer from the Sony employee who works as a trainer for Sony products:

"Sorry, i think there's been some confusion here.

PDOS on the A99 requires compatibility from the camera, but then lens doesn't require a firmware update because it's already designed to use PDAF.

PDOS on the NEX-5R and NEX-6 require a firmware update to the lenses because they were manufactured with only CDAF in mind, and require a firmware adjustment to take advantage of PDAF information.

I hope this clears things up."

For the above information see page 24, answer from "phaelix" (5th post on that page):
