Yes some D800 E versions have the Left Bank AF Defect

Both D800 versions share the same AF module, and the D800 left back AF defect has been reported in both models. Incidents reported here and elsewhere are mostly with the D800 version, but this could be because there have been less E's sold, or for those that use them are less likely to be using wide fast lenses wide open, where the defect can be easily discovered (if you have a defective model).

Contrary to a disinformation campaign being waged by at least 1 regular on this topic, the D800 left back AF defect is very real, and has been documented by countless skilled and professional photographers here and elsewhere. This poster is misrepresenting Thom Hogan's comments on this. Thom no longer recommends the D800 because of the defect.

While Nikon remains officially silent on the D800 AF defect, they have acknowledged it by fixing effected units. Or at least trying to. Nikon service centers are now acknowledging that the defect exists, and asking customers to hold off on sending units in until a new fix deployed.

Posts here and elsewhere suggest that new units are not coming in with the defect. So if you buy one, get a new one, latest serial number, and don't by from a retailer that recycles returns.
