Off of a normal glass air interface not a good explanation for that.

The sensor of course has vertical an horizontal patterns to it.

Also the AA filter has horizontal and vertical orientation (typically two layers of birefringent material).

Also note this effect wouldn't seem to be caused by a reflection back to the lens elements as the star bursts are centered on the highlight and not displaced. Seems a different mechanism than the purple ghosts.
