Re: Sigma 150-500 OS - Wildlife

A very nice pictures indeed! I bought mine 150-500OS as a budget option to try before spending thousands on 300/2.8VR or 500/4VR before I went to Africa last time. To my surprise, the 150-500OS worked really good with my D700 and still decent with D7000. Even the construction is solid and I found no dust or water inside of the lens after the Africa journey and the relatively compact size of the lens was a clear benefit.

However, nothing is perfect and that goes for these lenses as well. While I have seen quite many posts describing issues with these lenses (both 50-500 and 150-500), I used the lens few weeks before I left for the journey to proof it works correct... but after few days of heavy use in Africa, both AF and OS failed and stopped working. And while I made quite many decent pictures with MF and no OS, it was a disappointment. When I came back, I let it serviced by Sigma (some electronic chip failed, so they replaced it) and sold the lens.

As a result, I think it is a fine lens and unbelievable value for the money. But I will not buy any of these lenses again and rather live with the price and size of the Nikkor big guns than facing the risk of getting back home with no pictures / missed some interesting moments.

These are the pictures I took with 150-500OS in Africa (basically most of the supertelephoto images in the gallery):
