Thanks for the comprehensive reply Graystar, and to everyone else for replying.

This is a lot of information to work through, so rather than replying with any follow up qs I'll have a good read and try the AUTO ISO in practice, setting minimum shutter speed higher than I have been up until now (1/50 -> 1/100 perhaps).

One question though - using a tripod, surely there's no need for AUTO ISO - because shutter speed can be as long as you like and you'll still get sharp images - and thus, you want the lowest ISO possible, 200.
