Which version of the 80-200? I didn't think any of them had a rotating barrel for focus, but I'm not even sure what you mean there. Rotating filter threads? Push-pull barrel used in manual mode? Focusing ring? Manual or autofocus operation?

I have the 80-200F2.8 AF-D one-ring (push-pull design). In autofocus mode, nothing on the outside of the lens rotates (by itself). You can manually turn the focus/zoom ring, but it doesn't change focus.

I tried the old TC-16a teleconverter on it years ago with my N90s, and I was disappointed. I imagine that if you want to make any of the 80-200's look bad, it would be to put a 2x TC on it and then stick it on a D800.

On my D700, the 80-200 does very well at F4 and up.
