All very good tips. A few extras:

  • Enjoy your espressos standing up. You'll pay half the price or less and they taste just as good.

  • Instead of climbing the campanile of San Marco, do the one on San Giorgio. It's 5 minutes by boat from San Marco and it's quiet. I was there around noon in the middle of August and there were less than 10 people at the top. As a bonus, you get to see San Marco instead of looking away from it.

  • There are some nice areas on Giudecca with cheaper lodging and restaurants. It's much quieter there, too.

  • Don't buy Murano glass except if you've seen it made. Even on Murano, most is Chinese. As a matter of fact, don't go away from Venice and the islands right in the neighbourhood at all if you're going less than 5 days.
