Sorry to have to correct you but in a busy environment when perched on a branch the spot AF is the better choice. There you don't need tracking performance but rather reliable selection of the correct subject detail to focus on and spot AF does give you that reliability.

What I'm talking about is this: On my 60D, I have found that if I lock focus with a single point, the bird is liable to move ever so slightly right before I release the shutter. (Or, if I am hand holding the camera, I may move the point slightly.)

In this case, wouldn't AF expansion prove valuable? (Or maybe not..)
