I think the spec sheet of the 6D confirms something I have suspected for a long time.

Nikons latest enthusiast models seem to try desperately to outperform the previous or contemporary equivalent from Canon. Canons enthusiast segment seems to compete mostly with the pro segment from Canon.

In short: Nikon tries to compete with canon. Canon tries to avoid competing with canon.

The reason canon can't have a 7D style AF in the 6D is because I would cannibalize pro sales too much. Losing buyers to Nikon is something they seem to fear LESS than selling 6D to a potential 5D/1D buyer. This is of course just evidence that they set the bar too low with the 5D3 and Nikon didn't with the D800.
