Re: Is Canon G series still relevant?

If Sony can make the RX100 (which is smaller than G12), then surely Canon could make something similar.

Why would anyone even want a Canon G anymore?

Small sensors are no longer acceptable on prosumer cameras, in my opinion. I guess some don't feel that way, which is just weird to me. We're finally able to get small cameras with big sensors. Why would anyone want less anymore.

To put the equivalent zoom range on a larger sensor would necessitate a larger body or some new engineering to get the whole package into the same size body. The sensor is relatively large for a point and shoot camera. I don't understand your idea. These have been popular because they hit a sweet spot between a truly small sensor and a DSLR. There are more choices today for even larger sensors but the laws of optics limit the relative sizes of the sensors vs. the lenses for any given amount of zoom.

Can you tell us exactly which camera you feel has the better of the G12 in terms of sensor size and overall zoom and camera size?
