That's really an area where Sony could have done better

Rewind four years at the time the A900, 5d2 and D700 were released. The overall complaint about their AF point layout was "too narrow" (even in their reviews here at dp). Indeed they have all saved on costs by implementing derivatives of their APS-C AF modules.

I was really expecting Sony to do better this time - they show on-sensor PDAF progress but how can you justify an on-sensor array that has the portrait orientation, within an image rectangle that has a landscape orientation? That just does not make any sense, I can't think of useful compositions that would take advantage of such a layout, especially when tracking. The additional AF points should be decentered to the left and right parts of the landscape frame.
