Dslr's got ridiculously big and heavy.

The first Canon Rebel - 300D: 645 grams (22.75 oz)
The latest Rebel - 650D: 575 grams (20.28 oz)

The first Canon Rebel - 300D:
142 x 99 x 72 mm (5.59 x 3.9 x 2.83")
The latest Rebel - 650D (with an articulated screen on the back):
133 x 100 x 79 mm (5.24 x 3.94 x 3.11")

But then the successor of the 300D was even smaller and lighter than either of theese, EOS 350D:
540 g (1.19 lb / 19.05 oz)
127 x 94 x 64 mm (5 x 3.7 x 2.52")

So if anything they have tried to stay at the same size and weight.

Some may think that this is big and heavy, not me though, I usually run around with a battery grip attached to my 40D... Even when hiking! Occasionally I do take it off though, when I need to pack light or do really straineous hikes!
