Theory: Nikon couldn't use the D800AF in D600

All FX AF systems are still restricted to DX frame areas

Indeed the 51-point AF system on D3/D3S/D700/D3X has the exact same coverage as the one on D300/D300S. On D300 it cover almost the whole DX frame, on the FX bodies the same module only covers the DX frame area as well.

I believe the D4/D800 51-point AF are still restricted to the DX frame area also.

Given the D600 bodies are already ready for shipment by next Monday, the full scale production must have begun a few months ago, which is about the same time the issue began to brew.

Looking at the 1/4000 shutter speed, 1/200 sync, and limited buffer; IMHO the 39 point AF looks like a deliberate decision.
