That is a very blurry line, and extremely variable depending on whom you ask.

If you want clean black and white criteria which cannot be argued, left to interpretation and leave hard feelings, define amateur as one who has never received [tangible] compensation for their photography.

Compensation doesn't have to be cash, it could be barter and other considerations in turn for a photo or photographic services. That is on a par with what the Olympics used years ago (at least in the US) before they let just anyone play.

I started in the 50's - my first picture was taken with a Leica and hooked me for life. I no longer use my Leicas, but I am still taking pictures. Some things never change.
