Canon is not a fool

Canon puts a filter (actually 2) on all its big guns. In the 300mm f2.8, 400 f2.8 500 f4, and 600 f4 etc, the first element is a non-lens element. Also all of the above lenses are designed to use a 52mm drop-in in the rear, and actually not work without one. So the fact that filters degrade quality is total BS. It depends on the quality of the filter, and yes the front element of all the lenses I mention is for protection.
