Re: RX1 The Death Knell of the DSLR

Keeping in mind the RX1 is still an unconfirmed rumor, and could well be a photoshopped hoax or a concept not meant to turn into a production model:

It looks like the RX1 is a prestige model, that will serve to anchor the RX line as a premium camera system, like the Fuji X or Leica M series. Whether it sells or not is irrelevant. Having premium models anchors the brand image and makes it more desirable for luxury camera buyers. It will also make the RX100 more desirable - much like the Fuji X100's halo effect rubbed off on the rather pedestrian X10.

Canon did something similar with its 50mm f/1.0L lens - hardly anyone bought it, and it was optically terrible, but it showed the advantages of the large EF mount in that it could deliver features impossible in a Nikon F mount, and thus draw photographers to switch systems.

Car makers do the same with high-end concepts like the Audi R10. Watch makers do it with tourbillons with horological complications. Sony did it in AV with the Qualia line a few years back.
