If not the 24-70 on my D800, what would take its place?

I'm really tired of getting soft images when using my 24-70 f2.8 with my D800. Because it doesn't have VR, its weigh combined with the D800 weight makes hand-held work really tough and the sensor shows any slight movement as OOF issues. This isn't anything we didn't already know, but I'm ready for a new lens which has VR.

Yes, my shot discipline is good, in that I shoot at f5.6-11 and use a minimum of 1/250 second shutter speed, when able (will push ISO to get it if I have to), and I've tested to be sure it doesn't have an AF issue. What I haven't done is AF tune the lens. I'm waiting for the Mac version of FoCal, but will try to do it manually, in the meantime.

Has anyone else made a switch from the 24-70 to something easier to use hand-held? I'm considering the 24-120 f4, but the opinions on its IQ are mixed. Are there users out there who've faced such a problem and come up with acceptable solutions?
