I decided that I really want a lens up to 300mm.

For baseball, absolutely.

I know the EF 70-200mm f/4L (Non-IS) is a great lens, but I'll be forever cropping my photos.

You are still going to need a zoom though (instead of a single fixed longer lens), unless you are willing to give up the "near" baserunners.

Best practice is to use 2 bodies of course. Zoom on one and long lens on the other.

I will keep scanning the used listings for a 100-400L for under $1000 but this is unlikely in the short term.

Be absolutely sure you test a used 100-400 extremely thoroughly. There are a LOT of soft older copies floating around.

I've decided to buy something cheaper in the 70-300 range for now.

You gotta have something with more reach for now. And you'll probably be surprised how well it actually does.

And eventually, I will buy the EF 100-400L but will still have something to use for now. I really wish I did not have to compromise but that's life ... I guess!

Just make it your priority. A good L tele will take you to the next level.
