raywes - I don't own either a Canon SX40 or a Panasonic FZ200 but am looking at both, although I will wait to see what the SX50 offers when it comes out. I did note that at

you can compare the SX40 with the Panasonic FZ150, the predecessor to the FZ200, over a wide range of identical photos at various isos. Just go to cameras and then to compare images and pick the 2 cameras for side-by-side comparison. After viewing almost every photo at every iso my feeling is that the FZ150 clearly seemed to have the best images regardless of the iso used. Of course, this is only my opinion. From what I have read from most observers, the FZ200 seems to have even better quality photos than the FZ150, but this has not been confirmed by a major camera review forum as of yet.
