I personally favor 70-90mm for focal length on APS-C, if you're talking prime. If zoom, and group pictures, I use 30-50mm on my Sony 16-50. Even then, on occasions, I have to go as wide as 24mm (and deal with edge distortion), when I decide not to brag about the size of my house.

But certainly would not recommend anything this side of 50mm for portraits. Can be used, but only if there is a need.
