Lens Adapter fit or lens quality puzzle

I've got two issues:

1) a lens adapter that may or may not be affecting sharpness.

2) legacy lenses that were quite sharp on film but seem only par with the kit lens--leaving me either disappointed with the legacy lenses or really impressed by the kit lens.

The lens adapter is a FOTODIOX PK-m4/3. Adapter to body (E-PL1) is tight but adapter to legacy lens is loose: almost a millimeter rotationally and a tiny bit of side to side shift (but not rocking).

Shooting using the timer, mounted on a tripod, IBIS off I'm getting no better sharpness from my legacy lenses than I am from the kit lens (and possibly not quite as good as the kit lens).

So, any thoughts? Is my slightly loose adapter making my favorite legacy lenses look weak or is the kit lens really that good?
